If you like racing, Formula 1 racing, then this is the movie for you. Starring Brad Pitt as an aging driver called in by his best friend Reuben, Javier Bardem, to save the team. It is an old, old story and a very simple one.

What is excellent about this film is the shots when the drivers are racing, the behind the scenes moments and the difficulty of having two drivers and not saying which one is the primary driver. Would it be awful to say I was more interested in the ‘How the movie was made’ than the actual movie.

With an emphasis on team work, I was reminded of the animated film Cars which had a very similar story. Old timer comes in to help a cocky young driver and teach him about team work and in the process they win. So, as far as narrative goes, this is not the main thrust of this film. It did, however, have the feel of a promotional video: people from the real world of F1 racing, including Lewis Hamilton, an absolute ton of product placement, an all-star cast and a song written by Ed Sheeran.

Or was it educational? I know far more about tyres than I did before, following the rules of building the cars and what goes on backstage in their shiny white ‘factory’. This knowledge is supposed to give me a greater understanding of a race and therefore more enjoyment and while I know this to be true, I am just not interested in F1 racing.

This is an edutainment film, if there is such a word. Nothing wrong with that. Wikipedia states that this is the highest grossing film of Pitt’s career, Apple film and autocar racing. That’s a lot, so there are plenty of people out there who loved this.

It was a 5/10 for us.

I’d love to hear what you think
